In this activity, you will read an excerpt about a project called “CovidWatch” and consider its strengths and pitfalls. Read the summary and answer the questions below.
CovidWatch
The “CovidWatch” project aims at providing an augmented healthcare ecosystem. It is a pioneering low-cost solution that all healthcare stakeholders can benefit from. “CovidWatch” connects healthcare providers to elderly residents and patients via smartwatches, complementary smart products (location beacons, long-life batteries, distress buttons) and advanced software. Our consortium consists of six partners: four industries and two research institutes.
“CovidWatch” is a unique and proactive monitoring and distress system with location tracking and a powerful Covid-19 track-and-trace system. It was developed to help people in distress, predict early health risks or diseases, improve healthcare staff efficiency, and provide Covid-19 countermeasures. It uses advanced algorithms, data analytics, AI, and deep machine learning to gather the data required.
“CovidWatch” sends instantaneous alerts to doctors and nurses with information about a senior resident’s early-stage health risks such as potential fall risk, deviations in sleeping patterns, Covid-19 symptoms, and more. It also has an optical sensor (PPG), which detects the user’s heart rate.
Thanks to its Covid-19 track-and-trace system, “CovidWatch” protects people from Covid-19 at healthcare and senior care facilities. It allows contacts over the last 14 days between residents or patients, healthcare staff and visitors to be visualised. If someone is diagnosed with Covid-19, a detailed list of recent contacts is produced. This list provides names, roles/positions, locations, and time and duration of contacts. “CovidWatch” offers a solution that enables preventive countermeasures.
What are the strengths of the “CovidWatch” project? What are the possible pitfalls/shortcomings of the project?
