BIO-REFINAL
The “BIO-REFINAL” project aims at building the largest global industrial biorefinery plant for the cost-effective and sustainable production of highly nutritious ingredients from microalgae. The plant will demonstrate the techno-economic and environmental feasibility of microalgae as a renewable biological source for high quality food ingredients.
For this purpose, innovative technologies for the cultivation and harvesting of microalgae, and the extraction, concentration and purification of the relevant components will be implemented. In addition, the plant will be coupled to one of the world’s largest geothermal power plants, and leverage its waste heat, natural CO2 emissions, pristine water and 100% green energy for our processes, which will result in a carbon-negative footprint and enable us to minimise production costs. Efficient collaboration between all relevant actors throughout the whole bio-based value chain will be established.
The main objectives of the “BIO-REFINAL” project are:
- To establish an innovative, sustainable, and highly cost-effective production process to obtain highly nutritious food ingredients from microalgae.
- To optimise cultivation parameters to maximise production yields of microalgae with high contents of the desired ingredients.
- To increase efficiency of harvesting and biorefining processes to minimise their economic impact on production costs.
- To assess the potential of proteins, fatty acids, and antioxidants in different food products and develop a commercialisation strategy that includes distribution and marketing measures for their exploitation.
