Professional AI Use in Higher Education is a three-course programme that supports professionals as they navigate becoming effective AI collaborators. From learning basic definitions of AI to creating goals to become the AI subject matter expert in the office, this programme supports professionals in university settings and beyond in:

 

• understanding and increasing AI literacy,

• incorporating AI into daily tasks,

• recognising the impact of AI at the organisational and societal levels,

• developing ethical standards for AI use,

• and creating plans to continue AI learning.

 

Professional AI Use in Higher Education currently includes the following courses:

1. Learn the Basics of AI

2. Develop Your Professional AI Use

3. Thrive in an AI-Enhanced Professional Environment (expected December, 2024)

What You'll Learn

Learn the Basics of AI provides an introduction to using AI in the workplace to increase efficiency and productivity. This course includes applying the AI literacy framework, ethical considerations for using AI in professional work, and developing a plan to collaborate with AI on professional tasks.


Develop Your Professional AI Use explores the AI literacy framework in greater depth and examines the impact of AI on the organisational and societal levels. This course highlights the need to stay informed of AI advancements and create a plan to become the AI expert in your organisation.

 

Thrive in an AI-Enhanced Professional Environment supports professionals as they prepare to  navigate their career paths in an AI-driven  future by applying strategies to integrate AI as  an augmentative tool and developing key skills to use AI effectively in their work.

Course Expert(s)

Dr Lynette Pretorius
 

Dr. Lynette Pretorius is an award-winning educator and researcher in the fields of academic language, literacy, research skills, and research methodologies. She has experience teaching undergraduate, postgraduate, and graduate research students, including supervising PhD students. Lynette is the author of multiple journal articles and two academic books focused on the experiences of graduate research students in academia. She has qualifications in Medicine, Science, Education, as well as Counselling, and her research interests include doctoral education, academic identity, student wellbeing, AI literacy, and autoethnography. Lynette is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy – an international honour awarded to educators who demonstrate a thorough understanding of, and a strong commitment to, teaching and learning approaches which foster high-quality student learning.


 

Dr Marc Pinski 

Dr. Marc Pinski is a researcher and consultant with experience in artificial intelligence and business strategy. Currently, he is a researcher at the Technical University of Darmstadt. He has collaborated in and organised different working groups on "AI & Finance – Innovation, Resilience, and Responsibility" and "Responsible Algorithmic Decision-Making in the Workplace" at the Center for Responsible Digitalization (ZEVEDI).

His research centers on AI Literacy, including conceptualization, measurement, empowerment, and its impacts on individuals and organisations. His work has been published in journals such as "MIT Sloan Management Review," "Electronic Markets," "Computers in Human Behavior: Artificial Humans," and "Computers and Education Open," and presented at conferences like the "International Conference on Information Systems," "Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems," and "Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences."

Dr Pinski holds a PhD in Information Systems from the Technical University of Darmstadt, a Master of Science in Management and Strategy from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Freie Universität Berlin.

 

Dr. Leo S. Lo

 

Dr. Leo S. Lo is currently the Dean of the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences at the University of New Mexico. With an educational background that includes a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania and graduate degrees in Survey Research, Library & Information Studies, and Screenwriting, Dr. Lo brings a diverse and comprehensive skill set to his role.

A key area of focus for Dr. Lo is integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into library services and academic support, aligning with the evolving landscape of library sciences and education technology. He actively engages in research and discussions around AI, aiming to enhance AI literacy and its ethical application in academia. Dr. Lo's work in this domain is characterised by a balance of strategic leadership and a hands-on approach to the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in educational settings.
