Intro

Foundations of Bibliometrics provides an introductory look into key terminology related to university research and citations associated with university rankings.

This online course provides the prerequisite knowledge required for the Maximising Research and Crunching Data courses in the Building World Class Universities knowledge track.

What You'll Learn

• An introduction to bibliometrics

• An exploration of terminologies related to three common ranking agencies’ indicators

• An exploration of the h-index metric, an important component of ranking agencies’ methodologies

This course consists of the following three modules:

1. Introducing Bibliometrics

2. Introducing Rankings Indicators

3. Introducing Metrics for Journals

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

✓ Recall key terminology related to bibliometrics

✓ Define key indicators for THE and QS world rankings

✓ Recall metrics for author impact and journal impact as they relate to university rankings

Course Expert(s)

César Wazen

César Wazen is the Director of the International Affairs Office at Qatar University. He designed and implemented the ranking strategy that Qatar University has used to dramatically improve their university rankings.

César’s interests in rankings, academic accreditation and student assessment are backed by extensive experience teaching mathematics and statistics as well as in whole-school accreditation. He holds a BSc in mathematics, a teaching diploma and a master’s in educational administration and policy studies, all from the American University of Beirut and currently pursuing doctoral studies in European and International Studies.
